How Porondam matching works
What is Porondam?
Porondam (පොරොන්දම්) is the traditional Sri Lankan way of checking whether two horoscopes are compatible before a marriage. It compares the positions of the moon at the time each person was born: the moon sign (rashi) and the birth star (nakshatra).
Muthumina uses the widely used Ashta Koota system, which scores 8 factors out of 36 points, together with the extra checks that Sinhala astrologers traditionally look at: Rajju, Mahendra and Stree Deergha.
How to read the score
- 18 points or more out of 36 is traditionally considered acceptable.
- Above 24 is usually considered a good match, and above 28 a very good one.
- Nadi (8 points) and Rashi/Bhakoot (7 points) carry the most weight, so a zero in either is worth discussing with an astrologer.
- Many families treat a Rajju mismatch as important even when the total score is high.
Why the birth time and place matter
The moon moves into a new birth star about once a day, so the time and place of birth change the result. Use the time from the birth certificate where you can. Muthumina uses the sidereal (Lahiri) zodiac and Sri Lanka's historical time zones automatically.
Porondam questions
How many Porondam points are needed for marriage?
Traditionally, 18 or more out of 36 Ashta Koota points is considered acceptable. Families often also look at Rajju and the individual factors, not only the total.
Is this Porondam checker free?
Yes. You can check any pair of birth details free, without creating an account. Members also see Porondam compatibility on the profiles they view.
What if we don't know the exact time of birth?
You can still check, but the birth star may change if the time is wrong, which changes the result. Use the time on the birth certificate whenever possible.
Is the birth information stored?
No. The details you enter here are only used to calculate this result and are not saved.
Is a low Porondam score a reason not to marry?
Porondam is a cultural tradition, not a scientific prediction. Many couples with low scores have happy marriages. Treat it as one input to discuss with your family, or with an astrologer who can read both full horoscopes.
